How to Create Community With KonMari

By now, we’re sure you know about Marie Kondo and The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up. If you haven’t, Marie Kondo is a professional organizer who incorporates mindfulness, thoughtfulness, and elements of the Shinto religion into her organization practice, also called Kond Mari. As the KonMari method picks up steam across the U.S, you could create community with KonMari. Below are a few suggestions for tidying up together.

Organize a clothing swap

Have you ever attended a clothing swap? It’s fun, it brings people together, and best of all, it saves a huge amount of clothes from being dumped in a landfill. One of the things Marie Kondo tells people to examine is their closet. Chances are, there are lots of clothing that no longer sparks joy; but, it could spark joy for someone else. Create a flyer and encourage your residents to comb through their closets, then meet at the office or clubhouse and trade! You never know what friendships will be made or what cool things you can find.

Provide a “Free Space”

Don’t be mistaken, when we say “free space” we’re talking about a small community table where people can put functional things they no longer want. Anything on this table can be picked up by anyone else in the community. Though it may take an extra few minutes to keep in order, there is a great value to giving things away instead of sending them to the dump.

Organize a Community Dump Day

Now that everyone knows about KonMarie, save your trash from overflowing and organize a community dump day. Choose a day to bring in a dumpster and encourage your residents to get rid of bulky items that could clog your trash area.
